I lovelovelove the packaging of Jamie Oliver's new food line. The red & greens and the handmade looking tags are so yummy looking! Come to think of it, food packaging in the UK is generally very well thought aesthetically and environmentally. How is food packaging in your country? Here most food packs are very generic, all packages look alike, all have almost the same fonts and style, and they are neither practical nor environment-friendly. That is good for not inducing consumption of packaged foods though; I know I could not resist buying all of Jamie's products above.

Jamie Oliver'ın yeni çıkardığı yiyecek grubunun ambalajlarına bayıldım. Kırmızı & yeşiller ve elle yapılmış gibi duran etiketler nefis gözüküyor! Düşündüm de İngiltere'de gıda ambalaşları genel olarak çok iyi düşünülmüş, hem estetik hem de çevre dostu olması açısından. Gerek her köşebaşında bulunan Marks & Spencer'ın, gerek gurme dükkanlardan ve pazarlardan alınan ürünlerin ambalajları hep çok güzel. Süpermarket markaları muhtemelen bu bahsettiklerim kadar yaratıcı ve güzel değillerdir, orada süpermarkete gitmediğim için bilemiyorum. Bizde de nedense bu alan pek gelişmemiş, bütün ambalajlar birbirine benziyor, üzerlerinde aynı yazı font'ları kullanılmış, farklı markaların muadil ürünlerinin ambalaj grafikleri yanıltıcı derecede aynı gözüküyor, çoğu hiç pratik değil ve üstelik çevre dostluğu da hak getire. Gerçi ambalajların cazip olmaktan uzak olması ambalajlanmış yiyeceklerin tüketimini körüklememesi açısından iyi birşey de olabilir; yukarıdaki kavanozların hepsini birden almamak için kendimle büyük bir savaş vermem gerekirdi muhtemelen.

Another British brand Cravendale has teamed up with half Finnish/half English/100% talented artist Sanna Annuka for their new milk packaging. The pictures speak for themselves, they're beautiful, and if I bought these I could never bring myself to throw away an empty bottle and thus I would be doomed to live in a trash-hoarder's nest for the rest of my life :)

Bir başka İngiliz markası Cravendale yarı Fin/yarı İngiliz/%100 yetenekli sanatçı Sanna Annuka ile işbirliği yaparak yeni süt ambalajlarını ona tasarlattı. Fazla yoruma gerek yok, resimlerden göreceğiniz gibi çok güzeller. Bunlardan satın alsam sanırım şişelerini atmaya asla kıyamaz ve ömrümün kalanını yavaşça dolan bir çöp evde geçirmeye mahkum olurdum :)
The colors, the typeface, the adorable icons are so fitting for a milk pack, I wonder why they weren't designed beautifully like this in the first place? I really am looking forward to seeing more food packaging designed by artists. If products are everywhere and we will be drowning in waste, then the least we can do is make it beautiful!

Renkler, yazı stili, sevimli ikonlar bir süt ambalajı için çok uygun, merak ediyorum baştan beri bu kutular neden bu kadar güzel olacak şekilde tasarlanmıyor? Bad, bad blogger. I must be the only blogger who made an amazing trip to London and didn't blog about it. For all of you out there who are planning Europe trips, move London up to the number one spot you want to see, because trust me you want to see it. I have been to Istanbul, Milan, Venice, Philadelphia, Washington DC, briefly NY and a bunch of cities in Turkey, and London is by far my favorite. Ok apparently I haven't seen that many places but my mom and dad have seen cities all throughout Europe and it's their favorite too.
I was very fortunate to have a collegue who took the time to take me to all the nicest design stores. My favorites were on Kings Road (SW3). There were a couple of antique stores there (that got me head over heels) which I can't remember the names of, but they were near the big Designer's Guild stores(at which I drooled a lot). I suspect one of the stores is After Noah because of the vintage telephones, but I could be wrong. On the same street were Design House Stockholm, which was like a candy shop for an industrial designer, and The Holding Company. Other than these small but striking stores on Kings Road, we went to a lot of larger stores as well, The Conran Shop(where I got to try every lovely design classic there was) was awesome, Heal's was ok. The highlight of Heal's was the Peyton and Bryne in it, which was the cutest bakery ever with the most amazing cupcakes. You must go there if you go to London. We went to a bunch of stores in 2 days, 1 day near Farnborough and the 2nd day in London. Our last stop together was Regent Street, which had an awesome Habitat, but most importantly Liberty of London.

The building is actually very large and wide but the street it's located on is kind of narrow so the building never shows up in photographs as a whole!

If you think they left the exterior original but modernized the interior, you are wrong. The interior is just as striking with the richest, warmest timbers, beautiful wooden beams, and exquisite fireplaces all throughout the building.

I was very fortunate to be there during the exhibition titled ‘Liberty celebrates 70 years of Knoll Past, Present and Future’ . I got to see so many design classics in such a beautiful atmosphere. The modern furniture contrasted so nicely with the old features of the building that it created a beautiful harmony of colors and textures. The pictures are not doing this exhibition any justice, I walked around the area 3-4 times, each time appreciating the beauty of each object. We see these pieces of furniture on the internet all the time, but seeing them for real made me realise that they are absolutely worth the high prices they are sold for. Amazing details, seriously.

The fashion area had such great pieces that I was drooling all over the place. I was literally in agony when I entered the bag lounge. I was cuddling a Marc Jacobs bag when I realised my collegue was gone. Everything, including Liberty's own brand was extremely expensive, luxurious, buttery and beautiful.

As you can see from the pictures, they have great lighting in the store, some parts are even dark with only blue/purple light. This definitely adds to the experience and you feel like you're in another world.

Another quirk of Liberty is their fabrics. There was an area of light, soft, vintage looking fabric, and another area of classic shirts made from those fabrics.

Most fabrics had this type of teeny-tiny floral prints in the sweetest colors.

Please note that I didn't take any of these pictures as I didn't know it was allowed inside, and also because I'm too shy to act like a tourist. In fact, despite the consequences I'm glad I had ditched the unprepared tourist uniform of sneakers and raincoat for a much classier ensemble that day: BCBG dress, sheer tights, peep-toe platform oxfords. What a day it was, starting at 9 am, walking the streets of London until 10 pm. When I finally arrived at my hotel room I thought my feet had been mutilated for life, they don't look like troll-feet anymore but 2 months later they aren't completely healed either! {}
Oh by the way, by collegue turned out to be quite the gourmet. All the restaurants she recommended turned out to be delicious. Her recommendation of that day was Villandry. It is a foodstore, bakery, restaurant and bar. I am still having dreams about the french onion soup I had there. Highly recommended.

PS: I am completely in love with every place I went in Britain. Oh how I wish I could move there now! Say hello to a new Anglophile. I already adored their language, literature, music, cinema and fashion. Now I adore their weather too! Random fact about me: my mom was in her last year of college, majoring in English Literature when she was pregnant with me. I was born on her week of finals!

Ponoko is a website where you log on and design something and have it made using sheet materials and laser-cutting technique. There are different materials to choose from, and you can design jewelery, home accessories, puzzles, toys etc., but you can also design larger scaled 3-D furniture such as bookcases by using interlocking pieces. You make a design, order it, and they laser-cut the pieces and send them to you. If you notice any flaws of the result product you can always tweak your design a little bit and perfect it. After this, you can either submit your product to be sold, which means other people will see it on the site and order it, then Ponoko sends you the pieces, you send it to the customer. OR, you can just submit a "design plan" which the customers can buy your and have the laser-cut pieces delivered to themselves. Or, if you aren't into designing yourself, you can choose and buy from the many original designs sold on the site. Here is a great article about Ponoko, pros, cons, everything.

The other website, Bon Bon Kakku, is a pioneering net store where you can design your own fabrics. You make a design, they put it on the site for publice view, the viewers vote the designs. If your design is a success, it will be sold on the site. This means that you not only get to design the fabric of your dreams, but also your designs have a chance to be recognized and bought by many people. There are competitions held on the site continuously. Here are some examples that made it to the store:

Folkform design studio in Stockholm, Sweden is owned and run by industrial designers Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell. They work with the local factories in the small village of Rundvik in Vasterbotten in the very north of Sweden. They believe globalisation has given rise to a new local dimension in design.

The tiles and table of Folkform are made of a kind of hardboard called "masonite" boards. The difference between masonite and the other composite wood materials is that no formaldehyde-based resins are used for its production; the fibers are obtained using steam, and pressed with heat. It's completely organic, and because it's made of long wood fibers, it's very durable. I really appreciate the simple and environment-friendly characteristics of this material. It's an example that we can replace "bad" materials with "green" ones through design. Anyway, Folkform takes this simple material, and presses it with flowers and (already dead) butterflies. So you have a 100% organic, sophisticated material. These tiles and table remind me of the timelessness of fossils, or a flower we had put inside a book only to find it many years later.

This is one of those things I wish I had thought of. Instead, it was thought of by the brilliant Tord Boontje. Witches' Kitchen is designed by Studio Tord Boontje for Artecnica's "Design with Conscience" line. Artecnica uses eco-friendly materials and production methods, promoting manufacturing processes that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. The designs are produced in developing countries by local artisans.

The pots are hand-made in Columbia with naturally black clay. They are embelished with textured leaves using a method that was developed by Artectica and the artisans involved. The lids of the pots double as serving bowls. Cook something dark and gooey in these, preferably with chunks of unidentified meat in it. Don't forget to let out a chilly laughter as you stir.

The wood utensils are carved in Guatemala. They are made of locally sourced sustainable and reforested wood. The utensils include a wooden dagger, which would be an essential tool for a witch (for harvesting lizards' eyes, of course). A pair of salad tossers, shaped like a witch's hands, and also a variety of double ended forks/spoons.

Bu ahşap araç-gereçler Guetemala'da elde oyulmuş. Yerel olarak elde edilmiş, "reforested" ahşaptan elde edilmişler. Bu da ne demek diye baktım, "reforested" ahşap, doğal orman örtüsüne zarar vermemek için ayrı (ve boş) bir alanda özel yetiştirilen ağaçlardan elde ediliyormuş. Cadıların Mutfağı'nın araç gereçleri arasında, bir cadının kertenkele gözü oymak vb. işler için mutlaka ihtiyaç duyduğu ahşap hançer de bulunmakta. Ayrıca salata karıştırmak için bir çift ahşap cadı eli, ve iki ucu da kullanılabilen ahşap servis çatal/kaşıkları da seride yer alıyor.

Witchy aprons & such kitchen clothing are hand-sewn in Brazil. The kitchen couture consist of fringed Witches’ Apron and Witches’ Glove potholder for women, and a patchwork Wizards’ Apron and Wizards’ Glove potholder for men. Dress for the occasion: add a pointy witch's hat as well.

Hello my dear readers! Another week has past with me not being able to do as many posts as I wish, but my school project is finally over so I'm in a total state of euphoria; feeling relieved, fulfilled and happy! I also finally got a scanner, it's currently missing a cable but pretty soon I'll be bombarding you with great pictures from the big, BIG piles of magazines that I have in my possession. Thanks mom, for buying design magazines when I was just a silly high school kid! Anyways, today's post is about a fabulous designer who happens to have a very innovative approach on combining materials, using them in unusual ways, and makes the kind of products that make your heart beat faster when you set your eyes on it. I'm talking about famous Dutch designer Hella Jongerius.

Hand decorated dish from her "non-temporary" collection. Beautiful ceramics made with techniques that are centuries old. I like the delicateness the non-glazed parts give to it. This could be the dish our grandmothers prize in the depths of her cabinet for "that special occasion" that never seems to come.

In that way you give design a happier approach than the throw-away cheap things that are on the market." says Hella Jongerius. I think she has achieved that goal with her Shippo plates, seen above. They are hand-crafted with enameling technique, and as you can see they are exquisite.

Long Neck and Groove Bottles. She wanted to combine ceramics and glass because they are materials that are both based on earth and both require heat to be transformed. She did this by creating two seperate vases that fit each other. She wrapped them with bright tape to connect them because she wanted them to look unfinished, just like a sketch.

Tasarımcı seramik ve cam malzemeleri birleştirmek istemiş, çünkü iki malzeme de topraktan geldiği (kil ve kum) ve ikisi de ısı ile şekillendikleri için bu malzemeleri akraba olarak görmüş. Seramik pişerken küçüldüğü için önce seramik parçayı üretmiş, sonra da ona uygun olarak camı. Sonuçta birbirinden farklı biçimlere ve kimliklere sahip olan, ancak birbirine oturan iki vazo yapmış. Onları birbirine bağlamak için renkli bantlar kullanmış çünkü bu şekilde fazla estetik görünmelerini engellemek, onlara tıpkı bir eskiz gibi bitmemiş bir hava kazandırmak istemiş.

Delfts Blue B-Set, made in the delft blue tradition. She either followed the old patterns or replaced them with computer pixels. The jug at the back (which was originally inspired by an old jug at the Gemeentemuseum collection) has the same approach as the "Long Neck and Groove Bottles", the copper handle is attached using plastic ties.

Mavi Hollanda porselenlerinden esinlendiği "Delfts Blue B-Set" koleksiyonu. Bu koleksiyonunda bazen ince el işlerini, bazen de pikselleri abartılmış desenler kullanmış. Arkada görülen sürahi de Hollanda'daki Gemeentemuseum adlı müzede yer alan eski bir eserden esinlenmiş, ama bakır kulbu yukarıdaki seramik/cam şişelerdekine benzer bir yaklaşımla plastik bağlarla tutturulmuş.

Prince and Princess vases inspired by a 14th century copper-red vase from China and a 15th century cobalt blue Ming vase. The tiny holes that create the flower and dragon patterns are filled with colored silicon making them waterproof.
