Farklı farklı sandalyeleri karıştırmakla ilgili yazımın sonunda, Eero Saarinen'in ünlü "Tulip(Lale)" masası ile ilgili de bir yazı hazırlayacağımı söylemiştim. Sözümü tutuyorum. Bu defa, bu ikonik masa ile birlikte kullanılabilecek sandalyeler bulmaya çalıştım. Aslında bu masa herşeyle o kadar güzel uyuyor ki bence onun biryerde çirkin durması ancak çaba sarfedilirse gerçekleşebilir. Yine de bazı dekorlarda gerçekten çarpıcı olabiliyor, bulduğum örnekleri umarım siz de benim kadar beğenirsiniz.

At the end of my mix & match chairs post I said I was going to do a post on the famous "Tulip" table by Eero Saarinen. I'm keeping my promise. This time I tried to find chairs that would go well with this iconic table. Actually this table is so versatile that it looks good with almost anything. Still, I managed to come by some decors that make this table really shine. I hope you like them as much as I did.

The dining corner from designer Liza Giles' home. This beautiful house was featured on Decor8, and looking at the house as a whole, I understand that Liza Giles has such a great eye, and that this table is just a perfect choice for her home. The lesson we need to learn from this is: if we want to use this table with it's matching "Tulip" set of chairs, we should accessorize it with feminine objects in order to avoid monotonousness. Just because a table is a major design object doesn't mean we shouldn't blend it in with the rest of our decor.

Here is our second lesson: when the Saarinen table unites forces with wooden chairs, it kicks some major decor ass. It's beyond a dining area now, it's something to be loved, admired, be mesmerized by it's glossiness... Here we see it teamed with the very expensive Cherner armchairs. The flowers, chandelier, the walls...I need new adjectives to express my feelings of love..

Provencal chairs, "Tulip" armchair and marble table. The gold hues in the marble is tying the table to the chairs. And there's the big chandelier again. This decor is a great example of mixing very different style/era furniture together. It looks much more sophisticated and unexpected than using the matching set.

In the kitchen with Thonet No 9 chairs. This table looks great with any Thonet, but if I were to buy one I'd pair it with No 14s. A few years ago I saw an apartment in a magazine, and that's how they had used the Tulip table. You can tell how beautiful it was by the fact that I'm still remembering it. I will post that house as soon as I get a scanner.

After seeing all these examples you probably have an idea what kind of style you want to use your Saarinen table in. In order to give you more concrete ideas on what chair to get, I prepared two collages. In the first one I used very well known designer chairs, which are all beautiful objects if you can afford them.

They were designed in the 1800s by Michael Thonet, and they are pioneers in design because of the bentwood technique and their ability to be disassembled. I had the privilage of meeting Michael Thonet's heir, Peter Thonet (at Domus Academy in Milan).

"Is there really a need to design a new chair?" is a question repeatedly asked by famous designers, and yet they all have at least one chair design in their portfolios. There are maybe thousands of different chair designs in the world, so isn't it a big waste to use 8 of the same chair in your dining room? How about combining different chairs? This way you can multiply the style factor of your dining room, blend the different styles in your home, and have a decor that reflects your personality. Besides, you will be saving yourself the trouble of deciding between the chairs you like. You can achieve great combinations with mixing old/new, designer/anonymous, or different materials.

A country style table, wooden chairs and the Philippe Starck "Ghost" chair. I suspect that this chair also goes with anything thanks to it's classical shape and very modern material. Yeah it's not cheap, but it would really elevate the whole look of the other chairs you can score from a flea market. Besides, I think a distinctive chair like "Ghost" looks pathetically vulgar when overdosed, which is when used as a set of 8. Who wants to dine in a room that looks like a store?

The Panton chair connects the wooden table and the other chairs with the modernly decorated room. Sometimes I see dining rooms in magazines decorated with 10 Panton chairs, and I think it looks awful. Using only one statuesque design object in a decor works better for accentuating it's monumental properties.

You can also combine different designer chairs like the Bertoia wire chair and Arne Jacobsen "Series 7" chair here, and when your dining room is complete you can end up with a design classics collection! Don't worry if these chairs are way over your budget, because you can find knock-offs of designer chairs anywhere (if you feel ok using them). You can also use a bench instead of many chairs. In this room, the colors and materials tie everything together.

I'm not delighted by the green walls, but the Eames chair and Ikea stools combined with that table would work great in an office or any small space. You can use the stools as coffee tables when you're alone.

I can't seem to be getting over the sweets cravings I've been having, so when I look at these pictures I don't see "brown and mustard colors", I see chocolate, cocoa biscuits and caramel, and I'm loving the sweetness of these rooms!

The deliciously dark floor boards are gorgeous. Gigantic arched windows, book shelves, the classic elegance of the furniture, the use of blue porcelain vases on several places, and most importantly the glorious light that fills up this space; just gorgeous.

Although I still covet the Miles Redd bedroom I featured on my New Year's Resolutions post, this bedroom is one step ahead because of the wooden beamed high ceiling. I want to wake up in a magnificent bedroom like this one! Please God, let this be my future bedroom.

Very nice living room by Jeffrey Bilhuber. The bookcases, sconces and picture frames have a very symmetrical arrangement, but this symmetry is anything but dull thanks to the kind of weird animal(hippos?) paintings on the middle. The result is a relaxing, rich, warm room with caramel walls.

Apartment Therapy'nin "En havalı küçük apartman daireleri 2007" yarışmasında üçüncü olan "Ron's Hotel Sweet"ten bir fotoğraf. Duvardaki ayna bir madlen çikolataya benziyor, ve odanın geri kalanı da bitter çikolata, beyaz ve siyahın harika bir karışımı. Köşede birleşen kahverengi ve beyaz duvarlar, ve çerçeve gruplaması gerçekten çok hoş.

"Ron's Hotel Sweet", which won third place in Apartment Therapy's "Smallest Coolest Apartments 2007" contest. That mirror on the wall seriously resembles a piece of bitter patisserrie chocolate, and the rest of the room is a great mix of chocolate, white and black. The brown and white walls meeting at the corner, and the frame grouping on the white wall are really spectacular.

Yukarıda bahsettiğim "Ron'un Tatlı Otel Odası"ndan bir başka köşe. Koyu kahve-beyaz ağırlıklı odada turkuaz rengi detaylar çok hoş duruyor. Link'e tıklarsanız turkuazın yanısıra sarı ve gümüş detaylar da kullanıldığını göreceksiniz, bir de aslında yerde kocaman zebra desenli bir halı serili.

Another picture from "Ron's Hotel Sweet". The room is mostly dark brown-white but the turquoise details add a nice touch. You can't see on these pictures, but if you visit the link you'll see there are also bright yellow and silver details in the room, and a large zebra rug.

I was watching it barely snow the other day and was wishing for a bit more snow just so it would cover the city with that cottony feeling, and I suddenly started jumping up and down with excitement because of a link my mom sent me. It was about a trip to a village in Sweden, which is obviously under a thick cover of snow right now. The one week tour consists of staying at a husky lodge, trips to the mountains with a sled and a team of dogs, icefishing, snowshoe hiking... What really got me excited was the tour called "Husky Adventure", in which you get your own sled, your own husky team which you are responsible of caring, and you not only go for a sledding trip to the mountains but you get to spend a night there in a tent or cabin. Additionally you can choose to be taken to a "Sami village" in the mountains where you will be taken by your sleddogs, have an outdoor woodfired bath, meet the Sami people, have a nice dinner. That's where I want to be right now!

Bu seyahatin en güzel yanlarından biri bu güzel köpeklerle bağ kurmak herhalde. I imagine one of the best parts of this tour must be bonding with the dogs. If you have seen the movie "Eight Below" you probably already have an idea how interesting these animals behave when in a pack, their hierarchical order, how they look out for each other. I'm really into wolf packs, and a sleddog pack is the next best thing.
