Today I have a lovely link for my French-speaking readers. There is a lovely French girl out there, traveling all around Turkey, and she is writing about it on her blog. A Canadian reader recently asked me about what to do in a short trip to Istanbul, and I'm sorry to say I didn't have the chance to answer her questions in time as I didn't have access to my personal e-mail. I really hope she speaks French and can read this before she leaves, because this blog, Du miel aux épices d'Istanbul, has a perfect guide to travel around Istanbul. Too bad I can't understand all her great experiences but the pictures on the blog are enough to prove this lovely blogger has seen every interesting corner of Istanbul that I haven't seen. Küçüksu Pavilion. A "tiny" house for short length getaways from the palace of the Ottoman royalty and burjuvazi. When I was little, we used to go there with my family a lot. There used to be a floating tea house on the sea, overlooking this pavilion. They had the tastiest grilled cheese sandvich ever, and wafer halva sellers used to walk around, yum.

I have been trying to remember where I had seen this! It's Betsey Johnson's bathroom from Elle Decor UK . This is the single version of the sink I have my heart set on, as I said on this post. I'm posting this so I'll never lose it again!

I came across her apartment at Brilliant Asylum and immediately fell in love with the rich color scheme. I feel ashamed that I somehow managed to live under a rock during all the hype about Miss Trump's home.

Istanbul had the worlds third biggest home-textile show about 2 weeks ago, and I had the opportunity to go. The show was infested with dahlia prints, along with damasks everywhere. It took me about 5 minutes to never look at a damask pattern again. So as I was searching for other things to give my eyes a break, I found myself drawn to these type of patterns , especially in lime, chocolate, white, mustard, and blue tones.

2 hafta kadar önce Istanbul dünyanın üçüncü büyük ev tekstili fuarına ev sahipliği yaptı, benim de gitme fırsatım oldu. Yıldızçiçeği desenleri ve damask desenleri fuarı resmen ele geçirmişti. Bir daha uzun müddet damask deseni görmek istemeyecek kıvama gelmem 5 dakika kadar sürdü. Gözlerimi şenlendirecek başka şeyler aranırken, bu tip desenlere yaklaşıp durduğumu farkettim, özellikle de misket limonu, çikolata, beyaz, hardal ve mavi tonlarında olanlarına.

My favorite way to use these patterns is to not stick to one, instead combine different patterned cushions together. You don't even need to put solid colored cushions in the bunch because the pattern style already ties them all together.

If you are struck with pattern frenzy like me, head to Zara Home. The colors and the patterns are so good, I spent nearly an hour in the tiny shop, and I had no intentions for home-shopping. Seriously, their website isn't doing them any justice.

Siz de benim gibi desen çılgınlığına kapıldıysanız Zara Home'a uğramanızı tavsiye ediyorum (Şişli Cevahir'de var). Küçücük mağazada hiçbirşey almayacak olmama rağmen bir saat oyalandım. Renkler ve desenler muhteşem. Websitelerindeki resimler o muhteşem ürünlere haksızlık ediyor.

These have a bit of a more retro feel, if you are into that sort of thing. The wallpaper on the left reminds me of a curtain we had back in the 80s. Come to think of it, I think that curtain gave me an incurable phobia of orange & brown used together. But my biased view aside, these are actually pretty cool.

Bunlarda birazcık retro etkisi görülüyor. Soldaki duvarkağıdı 80'lerde sahip olduğumuz bir perdeyi anımsattı. Yalnız bizimki acı kahve ve cart turuncu renklerdeydi. Düşünüyorum da, galiba o perde bana şifa bulmaz bir turuncu+kahverengi fobisi aşılamış. Benim önyargımı bir kenara bırakırsak, aslında hoş olabilir bunlar.

Oh, completely irrelevant but we had Karim Rashid over here for a seminar at the show, and one of my friends got to interview him while he was here. How cool is that? I find Karim Rashid's ideas either ridiculous (him going on about being bored of nature and wanting pink grass), or very wise. He talked about how archeologists understand the lifestyles of past civilizations from the characteristics of their creations, and that today we need to establish a style for our epoch. So true!

Bu arada, konuyla alakasız ama Evteks fuarı kapsamında yıldız tasarımcı Karim Rashid de geldi İstanbul'a (diğer ünlü tasarımcıların yanısıra), ve yakın bir arkadaşım kendisiyle röportaj yapmış. Ne hoş değil mi? Ben uçlardaki Karim Rashid'in görüşlerini ya saçma sapan (örneğin doğayı sıkıcı bulduğunu ve pembe çimenler hayal ettiğini söylediği açıklaması), ya da oldukça akıllıca buluyorum. Kazılarda geçmiş uygarlıklara ait elde edilen bulgular onların yaşam biçimleri ve kimlikleri hakkında bize nasıl bilgi veriyorsa(belli dönemler belli tarzlara sahipse) bizim de çağımızı gelecek nesillere anlatacak "bugünün stili"ni oluşturmamız gerekiyor demiş Rashid. Doğru!

We are almost finished building the new farmhouse. Walls, floors, kitchen, etc all done. Now there one last challenge awaits. It's decorating the two bathrooms of the house; one on each floor. We have already chosen the tiles, matte, (10 x 10 cm - 4 x 4 inches) in a warm beige-light grey combination, with textured porcelain rust floor tiles. We were inspired to make these choices by Jane Cumberbatch's book "Pure Style", and as boring as it sounds we had done the exact same combination in my parents' current home, and are so happy with the result that we didn't bother to think of anything else. Anyway, because we are doing the bathrooms last, the budget is particularly smaller now. Another challenge is there will be a stand-up massaging jacuzzi-shower thingy in the second floor bathroom, and that thing is pretty ugly and space-age looking.

Yeni çiftlik evinin inşaası neredeyse tamamlandı. Badana, parkeler, mutfak vs. bitti. Geriye yalnızca biri alt, biri üst katta olmak üzere iki adet banyo kaldı. Fayansları döşendi (10 x 10 cm'lik) mat bej ve açık gri kombinasyonu, yerlerde de pas rengi, dokulu porselen karolar var. Bu seçimi Jane Cumberbatch'in "Pure Style" kitabından esinlenerek yapmıştık. Ailemin şu anki evinde de bu karolar var, bunca zamandır hala sevgi uyandırdıklarına göre artık bunlardan sıkılmayız düşüncesiyle başka fikir aramadık bile. Herneyse, banyolar sona kaldığı için bütçe de epey daraldı. Bir diğer zorluk da üst katta bir jakuzi-duş (hani o uzay çağı kabini gibi duran, ayaktayken masaj yapanlardan) olacak olması, görüntü itibariyle pek göz okşamıyor.

These are very similar to our wall tiles. My second alternative to stand-alone tubs would be wood-panelled tubs. My dad is against this, he says the wood will be damaged and swollen in no time. I see these type of wood-panelled tubs are very common in the USA, is it really hard to keep these in good condition?

Big window, yum. Did you know there are no windows in the bathrooms in Turkey? Except for tiny square ones for some air. We wanted big windows for ours but it must have been beyond the builders' comprehension, because they turned out smaller than we imagined, still big enough to peek outside comfortably though.

Muhteşem kocaman pencere. Biz de banyolara normal oda penceresi istemiştik, ama ustaların algı sınırlarının dışındaymış anlaşılan banyoda büyük pencereler. Gene pencerelerimiz oldu, ama oda pencerelerinden biraz daha küçük.

I like that the nicely color-schemed towels are on display. I don't get why bowl sinks are so popular though, they are very unpractical to clean when you spill water on the counter.

He is the designer of these gorgeous series for Iittala, and they are called "Taika", which apparently means "magic" in Finnish.
