Bad, bad blogger. I must be the only blogger who made an amazing trip to London and didn't blog about it. For all of you out there who are planning Europe trips, move London up to the number one spot you want to see, because trust me you want to see it. I have been to Istanbul, Milan, Venice, Philadelphia, Washington DC, briefly NY and a bunch of cities in Turkey, and London is by far my favorite. Ok apparently I haven't seen that many places but my mom and dad have seen cities all throughout Europe and it's their favorite too.
I was very fortunate to have a collegue who took the time to take me to all the nicest design stores. My favorites were on Kings Road (SW3). There were a couple of antique stores there (that got me head over heels) which I can't remember the names of, but they were near the big Designer's Guild stores(at which I drooled a lot). I suspect one of the stores is After Noah because of the vintage telephones, but I could be wrong. On the same street were Design House Stockholm, which was like a candy shop for an industrial designer, and The Holding Company. Other than these small but striking stores on Kings Road, we went to a lot of larger stores as well, The Conran Shop(where I got to try every lovely design classic there was) was awesome, Heal's was ok. The highlight of Heal's was the Peyton and Bryne in it, which was the cutest bakery ever with the most amazing cupcakes. You must go there if you go to London. We went to a bunch of stores in 2 days, 1 day near Farnborough and the 2nd day in London. Our last stop together was Regent Street, which had an awesome Habitat, but most importantly Liberty of London.

The store exterior. It is a beautiful Tudor revival building. According to wikipedia, the timbers used in this building were taken from 2 ships. It is the most original and stylish department store in the world.

The building is actually very large and wide but the street it's located on is kind of narrow so the building never shows up in photographs as a whole!

If you think they left the exterior original but modernized the interior, you are wrong. The interior is just as striking with the richest, warmest timbers, beautiful wooden beams, and exquisite fireplaces all throughout the building.

I was very fortunate to be there during the exhibition titled ‘Liberty celebrates 70 years of Knoll Past, Present and Future’ . I got to see so many design classics in such a beautiful atmosphere. The modern furniture contrasted so nicely with the old features of the building that it created a beautiful harmony of colors and textures. The pictures are not doing this exhibition any justice, I walked around the area 3-4 times, each time appreciating the beauty of each object. We see these pieces of furniture on the internet all the time, but seeing them for real made me realise that they are absolutely worth the high prices they are sold for. Amazing details, seriously.

The fashion area had such great pieces that I was drooling all over the place. I was literally in agony when I entered the bag lounge. I was cuddling a Marc Jacobs bag when I realised my collegue was gone. Everything, including Liberty's own brand was extremely expensive, luxurious, buttery and beautiful.

As you can see from the pictures, they have great lighting in the store, some parts are even dark with only blue/purple light. This definitely adds to the experience and you feel like you're in another world.

Another quirk of Liberty is their fabrics. There was an area of light, soft, vintage looking fabric, and another area of classic shirts made from those fabrics.

Most fabrics had this type of teeny-tiny floral prints in the sweetest colors.

Please note that I didn't take any of these pictures as I didn't know it was allowed inside, and also because I'm too shy to act like a tourist. In fact, despite the consequences I'm glad I had ditched the unprepared tourist uniform of sneakers and raincoat for a much classier ensemble that day: BCBG dress, sheer tights, peep-toe platform oxfords. What a day it was, starting at 9 am, walking the streets of London until 10 pm. When I finally arrived at my hotel room I thought my feet had been mutilated for life, they don't look like troll-feet anymore but 2 months later they aren't completely healed either! {}
Oh by the way, by collegue turned out to be quite the gourmet. All the restaurants she recommended turned out to be delicious. Her recommendation of that day was Villandry. It is a foodstore, bakery, restaurant and bar. I am still having dreams about the french onion soup I had there. Highly recommended.

PS: I am completely in love with every place I went in Britain. Oh how I wish I could move there now! Say hello to a new Anglophile. I already adored their language, literature, music, cinema and fashion. Now I adore their weather too! Random fact about me: my mom was in her last year of college, majoring in English Literature when she was pregnant with me. I was born on her week of finals!

Seni kötü blogger seni. Herhalde Londra'ya seyahat yapıp da bunu blog'unda anlatmayan bir ben varımdır. Avrupa seyahati planlayan herkese sesleniyorum, henüz gitmediyseniz Londra'Yı gidilecek yerler listenizde acilen 1 numaraya taşıyın. Bayılacağınıza dair teminat veriyorum.
Ben çok şanslıydım, çünkü İngiliz meslektaşımla aramızda büyük bir yaş farkı olmasına rağmen çok iyi anlaştık. Beni Londra'nın en büyüleyici tasarım dükkanlarına götürdü, ki yalnız gezsem bunların çoğundad haberim bile olmayacaktı. En güzelleri Kings Road (SW3) üzerindeydi. İnanılmaz güzellikteki birkaç vintage/antika ev mağazasından sonra Design House Stockholm adlı, bir tasarımcıyı tatlı hülyalara sürükleyen İskandinav tasarım mağazasına, The Holding Company adlı depolama aksesuarları mağazasına, ve Kings Road'u şanlandıran muhteşem 2 Designer's Guild mağazasına gittik, ki burada CSI inceleme yapsa yerlerdeki salya izlerimi bulabilir, o kadar ağzım sulandı yani. Eğer binanın tarihi dokusunu dışarıda dokunmadan bırakıp içini normal bir mağaza gibi döşemişlerdir diye düşünüyorsanız yanılıyorsunuz. Zengin, sıcacık ahşaplar, muhteşem ahşap kirişler ve sütunlar, olağanüstü sömineler bütün bina boyunca görülüyor.

Ben çok şanslıydım çünkü orada bulunduğum sırada "Liberty Knoll'un 70 yılını kutluyor: Geçmiş, Bugün ve Gelecek" adlı sergi sürmekteydi. Okurken kitaplarda gördüğümüz tasarım klasiklerini böyle muhteşem bir ortamda görme fırsatım oldu. Binanın eski unsurlarıyla bu modern mobilyaların yarattığı kontrast görülmeye değerdi, renklerin ve dokuların çeşitliliği etkileyici bir armoni oluşturuyordu. Resimler serginin güzelliğini yansıtamıyor, sergi alanını 3-4 kez dolaştım, her seferinde de büyülendim. Bu mobilyaların binlerce euro'luk fiyat etiketlerini haklı buluyorum artık, her detaylarından öylesine bir zeka, kalite fışkırıyor ki!

Kıyafet bölümünde ağız sulandırıcı güzellikte parçalar vardı, hepsi ünlü tasarımcıların son koleksiyonlarından. Çanta bölümüne girdiğimde artık fiziksel olarak acı çekiyordum. Marc Jacobs markalı bir çantaya kendimden geçmiş halde yanağımı sürtmekteyken iş arkadaşımın gitmekte olduğunu farkedip acilen yetiştim. Liberty'nin kendi markası da dahil olmak üzere herşey olağanüstü pahalıydı, örneğin bir cüzdan 700 sterlin kadardı. Fakat hepsi son derece lüks, gözalıcı, inanılmaz kalitede, tereyağı gibi yumuşacıktı.

Resimlerden gördüğünüz gibi mağaza içindeki aydınlatma ile harika bir atmosfer yaratmışlar. Genel olarak loş, yer yer karanlık, bazı yerlerde renkli ışıklarla aydınlatmışlar.

Oldukça geniş bir de sanat koleksiyonları vardı. Gerçi ben oradayken satmakta oldukları tablolar bu resimdekilere göre daha moderndi, ama hepsi de güzeldi.

Liberty'nin bir başka özelliği de kumaşları. Liberty kumaşı deniyor bunlara, ince, yumuşak, hatta neredeyse tülbent gibi bir kumaş. Kumaşlara ayrılmış bir bölüm, bir de bu kumaşlardan yapılmış klasik kesimli gömleklere ayrılmış bir bölüm vardı.

Kumaşların çoğu böyle minik minik, çiçekli desenli, sevimli renklerdeydi.

Bu arada bu resimleri kendimin çekmediğini belirtmeliyim. İçeride izin verildiğini bilmiyordum, ayrıca zaten öyle turistliğimi ifşa edercesine şıkır şıkır fotoğraf çekmeyi sevmiyorum. Utanıyorum turist gibi gözükmekten. Hatta, acılı sonuçlarına rağmen Londra'nın lüks caddelerini gezdiğimiz o gün, İngiltere havasına hazırlıksız yakalanmış benim spor ayakabı-yağmurluk üniformamı bir kenara atıp özellikle şık giyinmiş olduğum için memnunum. Ayaklarımda 15 santimlik platform topuklarla sabahın 9'unda döküldüğüm yollardan otelime gece 10'da döndüm. Ayakkabılarımı çıkardığımda ayaklarımın ebediyen trol ayağı gibi gözükeceğini düşünmüştüm. Üstünden neredeyse 2 ay geçti ama ayağımın taşlaşan bazı yerleri tam da iyileşmedi!

Bu arada benim meslektaş tam bir gurme çıktı, nereyi tavsiye ettiyse beni lezzetten çıldırtan şeyler yedim. O günkü önerisi Villandry adlı, yarı market, yarı restaurant, yarı bar biryerdi. Orada içtiğim Fransız usulü fırında soğan çorbasını hala rüyamda görüyorum. Tavsiye edilir!

Now that the heat-suffocation is over, I am actually starting to miss summer. Thankfully the weather report claims we will be having days remnant of the summer during next week. Yay! Next week is national holiday here! My exploitative company is making us work an extra day, and also cutting half a day off our vacation days(for no logical reason), but I am taking that day off; I will be warming my bones under the sun while my colleagues are working. Whateva! During the holiday I am urging my fellow citizens to think about the vicious cycle of working hard to consume/being consumed by work. If we could tame our desire to consume maybe we wouldn't have to work so hard. I would never spend my money on buying anything from the place I work, because that feels like all the time I spend working instead of living my life equals to zero. Maybe I'm weird...

Bu yıl tatil yapamamanın yorgunluğunu bayramda atacağım artık. "Satış" odaklı bir şirkette çalıştığım için bizim bayramımıza Cuma'yı vermediler, Pazartesi de tatil olduğu halde yıllık iznimizden yarım gün kesiyorlar. Ben izin aldım kurtuldum ama sizlere bir çağrım var; bayramda dinlenin, ailenizle, sevgilinizle vakit geçirin, temiz hava alın, entellektüel aktivitelerde bulunun, iyi filmler izleyin, kendinizi alışverişe ve tüketime vurmayın. Bu gidişle yakın bir gelecekte bırakın 9 günü bir gün bile tatil yapamayacağız, tüketmek için eşekler gibi çalışıp, çalışırken tükeneceğiz. Hayatta "sahip olmak", "istemek", "almak" dışında öyle güzel tatlar var ki oysa... Bayramda entellektüel aktivite yapın dedim ya, işte size ödev: Çalışma ve tüketim kavramları üzerine kafa yorun bakiyim, daha az çalışıp daha az arzulayarak daha mutlu olabilir, özümüze dönebilir miyiz?

Out, damn'd spot! out, I say!*

There are a lot of fishy things going on with Sarah Palin. I know I am not American, many people might say "non of your business" about the upcoming election. Truth is I see myself as an "Earth resident" more than I see myself belonging to any country, and that's the only reason why I care about the election in the USA. American citizens have a responsibility to choose the candidate who will do this world some good, because obviously the USA is one of the biggest, most influential countries in the world. Because I am not American, I do not have a leaning towards neither the republicans nor the democrats, so I can confidently say that I have a very objective viewpoint about all this. I do not agree with most thoughts of Sarah Palin, and I am appalled by the way that she has a tendency to impose her beliefs to those who do not share her thoughts. I'll clearly say it, I think she is a future fascist. Sarah Palin claims she is pro-life, but how can one be pro-life when she takes joy in killing animals? I do not believe a person can be religious when s/he doesn't have an appreciation and respect for God's all creatures. Animals are not as valuable as humans, some might say. You have to be really blinded to not see the incredible design, life, beauty, sense of community in animals. I am particulary fond of wolves, I am delighted by their nobility, their social structure, and how they have inspired folklore and mythology. When I came across this petition at Care2.com, Sarah Palin finally pushed my button. Anyone who can stomach the killing of helpless puppies in their den execution style is capable of doing horrible, horrible things. Americans, please do not bring this nightmare of a "human" upon us Earth residents. See the article below:

This summer, Alaska wildlife agency personnel staked out a known wolf denning site – a practice that is illegal under Alaska law – and, using helicopters, gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air.
When they landed, they found 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens – infant wolves just weeks old – and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.
Due to a loophole in federal law, Alaska is the only state in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to shoot wolves or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank. But the practice of "denning" – the killing of wolf young in the den – is prohibited even under Alaska law. This killing of 14 wolf pups disturbs even longtime hunters in Alaska.
During her two years as governor, Sarah Palin proposed a $150 bounty for the severed foreleg of each killed wolf and introduced legislation to make it even easier to use aircraft to hunt wolves and bears. But it's time that Governor Palin call for a thorough investigation into the killing of these 14 wolf pups, and bring any Alaska employees who acted illegally to justice.

Me and my mom love this cabinet so much that my father is actually going to make an attempt to build a similar one on his new workbench. I wish I had more access to that said workbench, I am very handy with a saw and wood, and love working with my hands, and the gorgeous smell of sawdust.

This kitchen is too cute for words. It is almost like a doll house kitchen. Where does one find so many items in that loveliest shade of green? Oh, for all those like me who loves the idea of vintage letters in the kitchen but can't find them, this idea of simply painting a phrase on wood and hanging it acquires the same effect.

More colors enter the picture. Red doesn't make this room Christmas-y at all, thanks to the shade of green being a light, sugary one, and also thanks to the addition of pops of blue and the occasional yellow.

Moving on to a different shade, that lime green is the perfect way to freshen up the woody atmosphere. I think it is very subtly clever to combine that wooden table with dark brown chairs and add some lemon zest(the lime and the yellow) and ice (chandelier) to the mix.

Chez Lisen says these are from Plümo. But I saw a very similar set at John Lewis when I was in London. They had a few colors too, the price was around £20-25. I almost bought them, but truly I wanted gardening gloves in a similar pattern for my mother. Anyone know where I can find such gloves?
