Freaking Out: Paris

Korkudan 3 Buçuk: Paris
{}

{}
I have a business trip to Paris in October. It will be my first time and I'm super excited, so I extended the trip for a few more days! However I'm totally freaking out as I have no idea what hotel to stay in. It has to be cheap, it has to be safe, and it has to be somewhat near the major attractions. I'm not after luxuries but bedbugs and rusty tubs are just not ok. I know which sites to pick hotels from but there are hundreds, so I'd rather trust the taste of my beloved readers and pick a tried-and-tested hotel. So help, anyone?
{}

Update: Thank you everyone, you guys made great suggestions and have been tremendous help. I narrowed it down to 2 hotels and finally made a decision. I'll let you know how it was when I return. If I ever go back to Paris I will definitely try to book ahead though, during my search I came across such beautiful B&B's with such low prices, of course fully booked. They are SO beautiful that I'd put their pictures on my blog! If you're interested, drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a couple of links. Another option would be to take a vacation rental; you get a whole nicely decorated apartment and it's ridiculously cheap if you're a small group. So that's my advice to anyone who wants to go to Paris.

I travel a lot, for work and pleasure, and the easiest and best way to find a good place to stay anywhere is on Trip Advisor (www.tripadvisor.com)

It operates a bit like ebay or etsy in that it's a community - people rate places when they stay there. I just search for hotels in the city I'm going to on Trip Advisor and they come up in order of their ratings. It's very easy to use and it's always been spot-on for me. Another great option if you can stay for more than five days is an apartment. If you search on google for "apartments in Paris" you will get hundreds to choose from (and it's so much fun looking through them). Have a ball! Paris is easily the most spectacular city in the world.

hmm. it depends. what is your idea of cheap? like under $200? generally hotels near the major attractions are not cheap...central paris is pretty expensive so it would help if you gave more specifics regarding your budget.

Thank you everyone who took time to post a comment:)

felice- I love tripadvisor, that's how I had my eyes opened to the concept of bedbugs in a hotel. God bless whoever came up with making such a site. Maybe I'm so frustrated because I keep reading the "terrible" comments and am highly affected by them.

sunday mornings- I think if the hotel is really trustworthy and presentable, I would be willing to pay up to 120 euros a night. But I'd rather pay around 100. I'd rather pay 120 for a nice hotel than pay 100 for a crappy one. I stayed at a Holiday Inn express hotel before and found it to suit my needs perfectly; clean, not an eyesore, simple, safe. I read that at Paris it's safer to stay at single digit arrondisements. For my first 3 days there my company put me at {www.mamashelter.com} which looks cool but the area is a bit shady, so I thought I'd switch to a more central hotel for my following 3 days for which I'll be alone.

Sevgili Alis,
tavsiyem Residence les Gobelins...
http://www.hotelgobelins.com/

Fiyatları makul mu hala bilmiyorum.
Hangi otel olursa olsun, tavsiyem St.Germain-des-pres mahallesinde veya yakınında olsun. Tahminim, senin bu mahalleyi çok seveceğin.

Gobelins de bu mahalle civarında...

Dönüşte Paris izlenimlerini yazacağına eminim...

sevgiyle, Bilgi

Residence les Gobelins'i tercih edersen, web sayfalarındaki "please note" kısmını okumadan geçme...
Bon Voyage

here is where I stayed in:

http://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/hotel/hotel-tiquetonne.html

it is really cheap, beautiful and in the city center. You can go to the most attractions by foot and there are a lot of beautiful shops and restaurants in this area :-)
Enjoy your stay!

Sevgili Bilgi- Önerin için çok teşekkür ederim. Benim seçtiğim otel 3. bölgede ama St-Germains bölgesine gitme fırsatını umarım bulabilirim.

Lex-That is such a sweet comment, thank you very much! :) Checking out your blog right away!

chiaroscuro- I made a different choice but thank you very much for your suggestion :)

Hey Billy, thanks for the advice, it's funny you mentioned mama shelter because that's where I booked for the half of my trip! The hotel itself looks awesome but I've read that the area wasn't too great, I'm so relieved that a stylish Parisien as yourself thinks its cool :)

Billy said...

hi alis,

well the area is not like a famous one you will hear like le marais, saint paul (which you have to go to of course) but, its a very cool area where you can find all sorts of people, artists (from all over the world), poor people, trendy people, families, actually there are few tourists in these streets so you cannot be trapped by a tourist trap haha!, i go out often there. You have many little concert places just a few strrets away from mama shelter like La Bellevilloise (very nice place i love it), just in the same street which is rue Boyer you have la maroquinnerie, in front of mama shelter there used to be "la flêche d'or" but they closed, it was one of the coolest places to go last year. Just to tell you that its a nice typical parisian area.

have fun!

xx billy

PS: love your blog

Hi Alis,

I am so glad I stopped by your website as I was getting for my trip to Europe.

I was looking to see some of your cool findings but then I heard "Paris" could not stop reading the comments and I guess I will check out some of the hotels mentioned here. wink wink ..

NY Muhtarı; you should definitely check out Mama Shelter, it was amazing. They make a wicked "duck confit" at the restaurant, and the rooms were great.
