Dilemma (Türkçe versiyon)

{Click here for the English version of this post, or scroll down}

Dilemma (English post)

{Bu yazının Türkçe versiyonu için tıklayınız, veya bir yukarıdaki post'a gidiniz}

I need some help from my insightful readers. Here is my dilemma:

I am 23, an industrial designer in a country which industrial design is extremely limited. I was a good student, and am generally pretty good at what I do. I have a passion for industrial design; not graphic, not web, not fashion, not interior, not textile. I don't need to work at the moment, I just wanted to work because I wanted to jumpstart my career. But money doesn't hurt as my family isn't rich and eventually I want to start my own design office or move abroad(both require money!). I have been in my current job for 8 months now and it is my first job ever. It is a very big retail company in home development and belongs to both Turkish and foreign partners. I am the only designer in the company, which means I don't have an experienced designer to learn from, and I really need to learn how the design process works in the business world and about production and project finalization. My dilemma is that I have been fantasizing about quitting my job for months now, had been noticing skills that I am missing and need to learn but can't learn here, had decided on a schedule for the following few months to accomplish my goals, and had set the first week of February to give my notice. But before I had a chance to state I wanted to quit, I got a raise! A small one, but you can't just say "I quit" to a boss who just gave you a raise. My dilemma is should I quit or should I wait some more? Because I KNOW I don't want to spend years here, and had planned in the very beginning to quit when I completed my first year here. I'll list the pros and cons of the job:

First, pros:

-It is a respectable company.

-The boss is extremely nice, sweet, smart and understanding. I do not want to burn bridges with her.

-I'm earning some money, not that much but I am able to put 100% of it to bank. Most entry level design jobs in Turkey don't even pay.

-Work hours are 8:30-6:00. It doesn't stretch any longer into the evening for me(I am not that busy), although everyone else in my department(the buyers) stay late despite not getting paid for extra hours.

-There is always a shortage of design jobs in Turkey, now there's the recession on top of that.

-I'm not learning anything but it is work experience on my resumé.

-The days I can see my boyfriend are so rare that he feels like a new man every day, like "50 First Dates".

-My boss said we can come up with a balance between work and my school (master's).

Now, cons:

-Although it is a design job on paper, I don't really get to do actualy design work, I am not learning anything related to design & production that I have to learn in order to have a career in industrial design. I find myself struggling to design textiles and boy, it ain't workin'.

-I feel like I should have been working as an underling to an experienced designer in order to learn things that I need if I want the freelance designing career of my dreams.

-The company has a suppressive websense policy, my web access is limited to blogspot and typepad, I can only do a fraction of the daily research I used to do. You can tell by the lack of blog posts!

-The office is in the middle of nowhere, it is ugly as hell, the whole neighbourhood is ugly and unsafe and I can't even go for a walk in my lunch hour. The windows don't open either. I feel like I am suffocating.

-Because it is in the middle of nowhere, my commute takes nearly one hour in the morning, and another one in the evening. No public transport comes here, we are collected by the company bus which feels like a rodeo. So as a result I leave at 7:30, come home at 7:00, Work takes approx. 12 hours everyday and I have no life. Haha.

-No proper web surfing and being stuck in an ugly office means inspiration is hard to come by.

-The food is so crappy and unhealthy, I have to pack my breakfast, lunch and snacks every day. That takes time!

-I see what I am missing in order to become a more sought-after designer, and some of those are things that I have to take time to learn outside of work.

-I miss my boyfriend, my family, my dog, running in the morning, sleeping, not cursing in the morning, having a life I enjoy.

-I really have to work on my thesis and go to school frequently if I want to get my master's degree!

-There are only 2 weeks of vacation per year. The remaining 50 weeks are all work. That sucks, but that's how it is in Turkey.

-I am only 23 and don't have any responsibilities, if this isn't the time to take risks and start anew, when is??

I have a meeting with my boss next Monday, should I:

a- Tell the boss I want to quit anyway (how do I tell her?)
b- Linger here for another month and tell the boss it isn't working for me
c- Stay here for 3-4 months and finish the year
d-Do I not make sense at all and should stick to this job (and die inside)?

Which option makes more sense?

New & Yummy

Yeni & Leziz
I lovelovelove the packaging of Jamie Oliver's new food line. The red & greens and the handmade looking tags are so yummy looking! Come to think of it, food packaging in the UK is generally very well thought aesthetically and environmentally. How is food packaging in your country? Here most food packs are very generic, all packages look alike, all have almost the same fonts and style, and they are neither practical nor environment-friendly. That is good for not inducing consumption of packaged foods though; I know I could not resist buying all of Jamie's products above.

Another British brand Cravendale has teamed up with half Finnish/half English/100% talented artist Sanna Annuka for their new milk packaging. The pictures speak for themselves, they're beautiful, and if I bought these I could never bring myself to throw away an empty bottle and thus I would be doomed to live in a trash-hoarder's nest for the rest of my life :)

The colors, the typeface, the adorable icons are so fitting for a milk pack, I wonder why they weren't designed beautifully like this in the first place? I really am looking forward to seeing more food packaging designed by artists. If products are everywhere and we will be drowning in waste, then the least we can do is make it beautiful!

A Wabi-Sabi Accessory

Sade ve Doğal

Clothed pebble prints are from knitalatte's Etsy shop.

Giyinmiş taşların resimleri knitalatte'nin Etsy dükkanında satılık.

I think they're very pretty, it wouldn't take more than a couple of hours to knit a delicate cover if you are handy with your crochet needle. If you are not, you can still get the print.

Eliniz tığ tutuyorsa bunlardan örmek 1-2 saatte biter. Tutmuyorsa da resmini alabilirsiniz.

Wouldn't the top right doily/log slice make a very cute coaster?

Sağ üstteki dantelli odun dilimi hoş bir bardak altlık olmaz mıydı?

Milk

Süt
{}

{}
Oooh Desire to Inspire blew me away with this one! Chances are you have already seen it, but I just had to keep this on my blog for future reference :) You can also probably tell from all the white that this is a Swedish beauty.
{}
Amanın, Desire to Inspire bu evle ayaklarımı yerden kesti.
{}

I will just do a bullet-style post and make a list of my love factors:

1- Matte subway-ish tiles, the wooden counter that looks like a biscuit sandwiched between all that creamy white.
{}

{}
2- Brick walls. I'm such a sucker for these, especially as an accent in white spaces.
{}
2- Tuğla duvarlar. Bunlara ölüyorum, bitiyorum, hele ki böyle beyaz mekanlarda vurgu onun üzerindeyse.
{}
{}
{}
{}
3- The fireplace that seems like a porcelain chimney. Update: Lisa from Knitty, Vintage and Rosy (a very cute blog) informed me that it is a Swedish tile stove called "Kakelugnar" and left us a link to explore. I never knew I would take so much pleasure on looking at stove photos, they're gorgeous.
4- I love how everything appears to be white but the walls actually are not white. The soft color is adding so much warmth and depth!
5- The gorgeous stone color of the stuff on the floor.
{}

{}
{}
6- The wall color not being white. Oh I already said that, but just looks how beautiful it looks with the white painted hardwood floors!
{}
6-Duvarların beyaz olmaması. Aa onu zaten söylemiştim, ama baksanıza beyaz boyalı ahyşap yerlerle nasıl da güzel gözüküyor!
{}
{}
7- That there are no curtains or any significant rugs(the only one there is is also white) and yet the house looks very lived-in and warm.
8- Black frames and the white gaps in them. The lamp. The soft and complimentary colors of the cushions.
{}
Lambader. Yastıkların yumuşak ve huzurlu renkleri.
{}
{}
9- White TV. No eyesore there.
{}
9- Beyaz TV.
{}
{}
10- The classical Turkish style coffee table with removable top in white. These things are usually brass with wooden legs. One similar to the picture above is available at Le Souk.
{}
10- Sini sehpaya dikkat! Oryantal tarzından pek hoşlanmıyordum, çaresi beyaza boyamakmış meğer. Bakın yabancılar nasıl da seviyorlar böyle şeyleri, burada benzeri 135 euro.
{}
{}{}
Dislikes:
I cant really imagine living without a tub, these open plan showers are nasty. But I do like the glossy white tiles.
{}
Sevmediklerim:
Küvetsiz yaşam bana cazip gelmiyor, şu teknesiz duşlar pek nahoş. Yine de pasparlak bembeyaz fayansları sevdim.
{}
{}
You might think white hallways are a good idea, but I would advise against it. We used to have a white entrance and every little bit of dirt/hair that comes from the street would show and gross us out.
{}

Greeting The New Year With A Beautiful Home

Yeni Yılı Güzel Bir Evle Selamlıyorum
{}
You didn't think I would let this year pass without making one last post, did you? I just realized I totally missed celebrating my 100th post, and my completion of a whole year of blogging, so instead I will celebrate my 130th post along with the beginning of a whole new year. Yay, happy 130th post, blog! So in honor of this lovely occasion I present you this lovely home from the December issue of Maison Française Turkish edition.
{}
{}
{}
The owners of this house are interior designer Isil and Tekin Kahraman, and it is located in Istanbul. Natural light is always present in this lovely home, curtains are very simple and the kitchen has a glass ceiling. All doors are also from glass to maintain light circulation.
{}
{}
{}
They didn't buy any new furniture, most furniture pieces had been custom-made before they even had this house. The cream sofas are custom made, the cream coffee table with wheels is designed by owner Isil. The wooden antique pieces are mostly family heirlooms.
{}
{}
{}
The floors are hardwood all throughout the house, except for under the dining table and in front of the fireplace; those places are floored with Turkish "çini" tiles. There are no carpets or rugs anywhere.
{}
Evin tamamında yerler masif ahşap parke, yalnızca yemek masasının altı ve şöminenin önü çini taşlarla döşenmiş.
{}
The tiles are such a brilliant idea. I too dislike rugs but also don't know what to do with empty looking floors. This is just perfect and beautiful. The metal lamps over the table are from Ikea.
{}
{}
{}
{}
Next to the fireplace is a rustic stove which works with embers from the fire, they use it for simmering tea and roasting chestnuts - there is no greater winter delight. I heard that making Turkish coffee this way results in the most perfect Turkish coffee ever.
{}
{}
{}
The sunlit kitchen is the favorite space among the household and guests. The couple bought the house when it was still a rough construction and they initially thought of building the kitchen in the middle of the house, but decided against that in order to take advantage of the high ceiling here.
{}
{}
{}
This is the room of their photography student daughter. The desk is from Ikea. This room has a beautiful celining as well.
{}
{}
{}
The bathroom.
{}
Banyo.
{}
{}
The master bedroom. Guess what is behind the white brick wall:
{}
{}
{}
{}
More views of the bedroom.
I really liked this house, you can click on the images for large views, sorry if the color is a bit yellow but I scanned them in expense of my magazine falling apart :)
{}

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. As you may know, we don't have Christmas in Turkey but the joyful holiday spirit has spread all the way over here too, we celebrate New Year's as a mix of New Year's and Christmas :) So for us, Christmas is yet to come! I had an "early" one last Sunday with my parents, who came over to my house, and fed me all sorts of culinary delicacies throughout the weekend. They even made their New Year's specialty; deliciously soft and smooth turkey with crunchy crumb & blackcurrant sauce. My mom also did her magic in the house and sorted out the fridge, and we discovered a bunch of forgotten apples. So yesterday I wanted to quickly sift through some apple pie recipes but ended up spending the whole day drooling at the wonderful pictures at Bread and Honey and Sweet Paul. God knows how much I love those two blogs, even though they always result in me binge eating sweet, sweet carbs of all sorts. I completely ransacked the New Year baskets sent to our office, oh well, they shouldn't have put them next to my desk, they're lucky I didn't drink the wines :) Happy New Year!
{}

Close Encounters With Lambswool

Koyun Yünü İle Yakın İlişkiler
{}
"Kara Koyun" adlı korku filminden bir sahne...
{}
Kapıyı kapar kapamaz kendimi can havliyle battaniyenin altına zor atıyorum.
{}
It's holiday in Turkey (the one that has got to do with sheep, if you are wondering the relevance of the picture above). My mind is very occupied by trying to decide which cheek of my bum I should lie on. My dog is practically sleeping inside the fireplace, and for the rest of the time she has devoted her half-cooked brain to a hunt for the naughty mouse in our woodshed. Someone needs to open the door to let her out, and face the freezing breeze in the process. At those moments I can hardly make it back to under the protective warmth of my blanket.
{}
{}
Melin Tregwynt'in battaniyeleri öyle güzel renklere sahip ki!!
{}
Melin Tregwynt has a selection of beautiful blankets, the colors are so gorgeous. We were visiting my grandmother during the holiday and she mentioned that she loves using the blanket throws that she had received as gifts, and always thinks of the person who gave them to her. I have to agree; it's the warmest gift one can give, especially in cold winter days.
{}
{}
{}
{}
{}
They made socks and other warm stuff too, but who cares about socks when you have got these adorable feet-warming creatures by your side? Oh, and judging by the reaction I got on this post, you guys are going to like the flooring seen in these pictures.
{}
{}
{}
